ÁGUILAS, “COSTA CÁLIDA” IN THE SOUTHEAST OF SPAIN
Águilas has a population of about 33.000 inhabitants. It is situated on the Meditarranean coast, halfway between Cartagena and Almería, just about one hour’s drive away from Alicante and Almería airports. It is well-linked with Europe by the Mediterranean motorway (A-7).
The town was established by the Troyan prince Helios Urces, a comrade of Aeneas and - in honour of its founder - called URCES. The Romans then changed its name to URCI, and the the Moors finally called it AKILA. Thanks to the Constitution of Cádiz of 1812, Aguilas got its own independant town council. Today, it is a modern, well-laid-out town with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its rich history, however, is not forgotten since there are various archaeological remains dating from times of the Moors, Romans and Phoenicians.
The municipal area of Águilas occupies a surface of about 253,7 km2, and has 28 km of coastline with 35 bays altogether. Five of the numerous beaches of Águilas have even been awarded the 'Blue Flag” of the European Union for fulfilling very high standards.
The geographic position of Águilas, protected by the mountains of the Sierras of Almenara, Almagrera and El Cantal, guarantees an excellent microclimate througout the year, mild in winter, and warm and sunny in summer time. The average annual temperature is 22,3 ºC; the average water temperature is 20 ºC, and the sun shines for more than 3.200 hours per year.
Águilas is
the ideal place to practice water sports like sailing, windsurfing, canoeing,
rowing, scuba-diving etc. There is a Yacht Club, a sailing school and two
diving schools.Even the most demanding gourmet will be pleased with the
rich Mediterranean cuisine that Águilas has to offer, with fish
and seafood and many more delicious dishes.
